Lullaby

My Baby Pich is the cutest little thing ever. And since I'm her godmother and favorite Auntie Trouble, it is my duty to sing to her. Well... I have to face the facts. I'm an awful singer (except when on a drunken karaoke night, during which I'm the WORST) and I hardly remember children songs. So far, I've managed to have her be calm with a song from my childhood, some cartoons called Spartacus and the Sun beneath the Sea. But since I get tired of singing the same song over and over, I improvise. It's really very simple: take any song you can think of and "lullaby" it. You know, softer voice and tone. Score! You won't believe how awesome you can lullaby Snoop Dogg.

Up and running

Jackpot! Finally got my beloved, old and slow Balthazar (that is, my laptop) back and running smoothly. Well, sort of. That means bad news for my fellow neighbors who will have to hear my constant typing mixed with reruns of cheesy RomComs whilst the football debate is also on the background. Perfect scenario for my overnight ramblings. For some, a motive for suicide or murder. For me, paradise.

And so, let's get this bitch up and running. I'm sorry for the lack of response to all of your lovely comments. I thank those who still take time to speak their mind despite my radio silence. You are wonderful, supportive readers. How do you put up with me? Seriously.

BTW, I'm an aunt! Those of you who follow my Instagram know the details and have seen the object of my affection. I'm going back on Wednesday to see her. What can I say, totally hooked! Will keep you posted. And well, as for today's look: I finally got a chance to wear my summer sales steal: and yes, you guessed it. More plaid.

¡Por fin! He recuperado a mi adorado, lento y viejo Balthazar (es decir, mi portátil). Bueno, a medias.

Long and Slow

A new addition to my already large neutral/earthy palette. August is proving to be long and slow. The perks of having zero vacations. Oh well.

Stride of Pride

I've been having a blast since yesterday talking with my mafia of friends about the walk of shame. Or as we like to call it, the stride of pride, typical of your 20s. Yeah, you know it, don't pretend like you don't. The "journey" home at the crack of dawn after spending a night out partying. Yes, that's the one. Runny mascara, heels in hand, a shirt worn as a dress that now everyone stares at. Daylight is your enemy, for a brief moment you feel like a vampire. It's tattooed on your forehead in big, bold letters: "I didn't make it home last night". You wish you had some sunnies and a cap, or something else to disguise you, and you look around to avoid anyone you know. Because, let's face it, Murphy's a bitch and you're likely to run into someone, preferably an ex. Finally, a cab - if you happen to have cab fare. And there, the final judgment. The cabbie (who, as fate has it, will be an old guy) looks at you and he needs no words. You can sense it: "I know what you did, girly". And... scene!

Your name is Mervin?

I've never told you about my person. My favorite. I have a little sister and she happens to be the one constant in my life. The first one I run to save in my tsunami nightmares. I think I haven't mentioned her before because we live in our little world and it's members only. No one could nor tried to understand: only she and I get it.  Not my other sister, not my parents, not our friends. And there's no jealousy about it: it's just a special bond. We have dozens of bits, nicknames, movie scenes, anecdotes and inside jokes. Things that are only funny to us. We know exactly what TV shows, movies or music the other will like. We force each other to watch youtube videos and read silly jokes. We do junk food extravaganzas until carb comas and sugar overdoses stop us. We both like the same sports team and hate our adversaries together. We're reality-tv addicts. Because only she finds as funny as me the "Your name is Mervin?" scene on Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Actually, only she can watch that movie with me more than ten times. Or want to be a Beverly Hills Troop girl. She's the only thing that would make me go back home. I know it's cliche, but even though we are apart, we manage to have our moments and maintain our dynamic. We skype about nothing, but it's everything to us. Because... my Penelope Pope gets it. She catches up. She manages the impossible.

Browns and neutrals. Clogs. And my Guatemalan jade with my iq' around my neck. According to the Mayans, I'm a hummingbird. No wonder I can't stand still.

Babel

I like to think of myself as a citizen of nowhere and everywhere with a permanent placement on Neverland. It's how I feel, especially lately that I'm getting closer to a decade of not living in my hometown, Dominican Republic. Still, I get a lot of shit back home for any changes in my accent, my suppossedly new customs, how I dress and even my eating habits. It used to make me mad, as a firm believer that, without losing your essence, you need to adapt yourself to wherever you choose to set roots after a certain period of time, and that implies some unavoidable changes. Now, I let it go, but still find it slightly unfair. See, when I was younger, I was accused of being "too yankee". Having lived in the States (deep, profound South, actually) during several periods, I had a lot of American influence. Then I moved to Spain, and I am now officially "too Spanish" for some. And to top it off, for my friends who come from all over Latin America I can be "too Dominican" at times. I actually get asked to "turn off my native accent" by my Spanish to-be-determined male companion when he can't understand me (usually during a fight). It's my own personal Babel.

So there you have it. Ironically, I'm no longer "too yankee" since I hardly ever speak English around here, except with Babaloo. I can't use anglicisms or spanglish being that it is frowned upon. My Spanish is now a slight mix of typical words from Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Perú, Costa Rica... Hell, I can say "slut" in any of them. But my friends are my family abroad with whom I spend most of my time, it is bound to rub off. I hardly hear my native accent except when I speak to my family, but I interact with typical dominican phrases just to keep saying them 'cause I love them, even if no one gets it. I will never, under any circumstance, stop saying "vaina"  although it pisses people off. I will always be loud - hence, my nickname Parrot. I can eat hot soups during even hotter temperatures. I will always be a proud dominican, but I'm also latin, american, spanish, taina, panchita, guatemalan-wannabe and above all, accepting of any culture that opens its arms to me and any custom that I like. Just because I can, I believe it makes me a better person. Because I'm not afraid of change, dammit.

¡First shorts of the season! What I lack in tanning I make up for in will.

Guilty Pleasures

I will confess that I have many guilty pleasures in life. Too many. And they are pretty guilty. Like OJ Simpson. Music? Oh yeah. Amongst the three thousand songs currently making me dance on my Ipod I have the most random and cheesy tracks. And trust me, whenever my earphones get unplugged it's usually to a Milli Vanilli song. And snacks? It can get scary. Oh, and Xabi Alonso... my guiltiest of all. Those thoughts where I want to use him like moisturizer. Yes, please.

I just realized that I look like a green Waldo. Damn. Happy Thursday. It's tortilla and beer night!

He de confesar que tengo muchos placeres pecaminosos. Excesivos, la verdad. Vergonzosos.

Farewell, Summer

The last of my summer looks, very comfy. I've been sick with a terrible cold all week, so I've already bundled up like on the ice age and looking at these pictures makes me nostalgic. Time for scarves, coats, leggins and booties.

I despise moving, I'll need another vacation after this.

Marco Polo

I love going out with my girlfriends. Ladies' night are the highlight of my week, as most of my married or happily involved friends take time off their busy schedules to grab a bite, a beer and a laugh with dear old me. It surprises me how we still manage make fun of guys, like old times, because they can be so dumb when trying to approach a girl. The nerve of some dude who comes hitting on you and you blow him off, and then he goes for the friend right next to you. If that's not exploiting a location, I don't know what is. Also, it's so much fun when your friends get lost on that crowded, hip place and you end up playing the Marco-Polo game to find them, or in my case, making parrot sounds. Gee. Growing up is overrated.

Lately I find myself going to extremes. This summer, either maxi or mini, no in-betweens. The sad thing is it reflects my personality. I don't like half-baked things. Black or white. Go big or go home. The maxi item for this look is a purple skirt with a yummy built in draft device. So fresh for recent infernal temperatures. I find these to be a great alternative to my eternal shorts.

Happy friday, everyone!

The Walk of Shame

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. And now the walk of shame. But don't get me wrong, I'm not referring to the traditional one, which, unfortunately, is no stranger to any girl. I'm talking about a worse one, that journey home after maxing out your credit card on the summer sales. You know it's wrong, you battle against your better judgment, your conscience, your parents advice, that little knowledge of personal finances... And yet, its overpowering. That feeling of buying something half off, like a drug, just takes over you. And you go for it, head first, as you feel like you've done something that's so good but shamefully wrong. Damn. But you get it out of your head for a minute. And then you leave the store, feeling ever so powerful, proud of your findings and your wonderful hunting instincts, great fashion sense, almost like a football striker: the right place at the right time. You can call me Messi, hell yeah. And then... when the euphoria starts wearing out as you walk on a hot summer afternoon, you realize the consequences of the recent events. And suddenly you remember again how to add, because, of course, during your madness there was no sense of arithmetic whatsoever. And just when you're about to crumble, it hits you: 30 days  to reflect on your actions! Unlike other intoxicated bad decisions you've made in your life (which trust me, have no going back) this one is totally under your control. Crap, and the scary part is that the best is yet to come.

I feel dirty.

Happy Monday, my fellow shameless sinners.

Ave María Purísima. Padre, he pecado.

Me siento culpable.

Feliz lunes, mis queridos pecadores.

#BringbackCheezBalls

Ok, nothing cheesy about my outfit - at least I don't think so - but I had a flashback of how much I used to love Planter's Cheez Balls. Artificial cheese was never more splendorous than on that concentrated little puff. I know sometimes I write the most random things... it probably doesn't help that posts are written during my long, insomniac nights. So I wonder, whatever happened to my beloved Cheez Balls? Is there some chance of getting the yummy leftover production on the European continent? Any Planter's heir out there I can woo to get this up and running again? Does anyone else remember the delicious feeling of popping the lid off and opening the foil seal? I don't know how I survived the intoxication of artificial coloring since I used to chase these with "purple" grape soda.

Back to the pictures. White on summer, no rocket science here. I like this relaxed sort of boho look. Another Forever21 piece as the star, this lovely lace skirt, perfect for this summer and probably most to come since it's something I wear so often. God, I can't get the Cheez Balls out of my mind. Sorry. #Bringbackcheezballs.

#Bringbackcheezballs.

Lolo and I

Meet Lolo! My "nephew" and sort of godson. Isn't he the cutest? He actually belongs to my amazing photographer friend who helps me out a lot with this blog. Rocío, thank you for all you do! Well, Lolo and I went for a lovely sunday stroll, he's getting so big already, even has strength to pull me and everything. I was wearing the famous and seen-throughout-all-blogs maxi skirt from Zara, nothing new, but I still love it. It was quite windy and I've been with an on and off cold, so I keep wearing huge scarves around my neck. I like this look overall, with the sneakers. Perfect for a lazy day.

¡Conozcan a Lolo!
