Comfort Zone

Lately I realize how I'm getting more and more into my comfort zone when I dress. I am no longer as willing to sacrifice everything for a fashion statement. Actually, I never was, except when it came to heels. I wore heels almost every day to college. Well, more like every day for everything. Lots of benefits: It was less challenging considering back in my country I hardly ever walked anywhere. Also, I've always wanted to be taller, though I'm not exactly short... but that's another story for another day.  Finally, I have flat feet so heels give me balance. It was only when I moved to Madrid that I realized how heels are really a sacrifice to the vanity gods: I would walk to school, about seven blocks uphill, carrying my laptop and books. I didn't care. My back, however, did. I am paying the consequences today. Now, as you know, I'm addicted to booties and huge scarves. God help me in ten years.

A mi no me importaba.

Milky Way Notes

As a little girl I used to dress up stuff to make them more girly. Over the top sometimes. The moment of choosing stickers for my notebooks... or my new pencil case, was of total concentration. I'd sparkle anything that came across me. It got stuck even after growing up. I remember going to college with a Hello Kitty pencil case (well, it was actually Keroppi) filled with tons of colored pens and weird looking accessories. I always managed to get great notes from lectures at class, and somehow at the same time I could pull off drawing dozens of stars all over each sheet. When it was time for a test I would get asked by my fellow classmates for these notes, and you'd see more than half the class studying with paper-copied dribbles similar to the Milky Way. Teachers would notice and ask ironically "Gee,  I wonder who did that". Sometimes I ask myself if that was a way of channeling my inner, crazy, slightly more creative alter ego. Serious business student meets crazy-coloring maniac. And it might sound like I was dumb, but I wasn't. But that's another story for another day. Remind me to tell you about my big, fluffy pink pen during my MBA year. Boy did that shock more than one.

The day we took these pictures the sky was literally falling with rain. I thought it wasn't gonna give a break, but suddenly in the mid-afternoon it stopped raining and the sun came out. Talk about crazy weather! Stuck with turquoise wellies.

Truly Outrageous

♫ Truly outrageous
   That's a Jem girl
   Glamour, fashion and fame

Jem. Jem is excitement, glamour and glitter... If you're a child from the 80s and you were half as cheesy as me, you probably remember and loved these cartoons. I was six when the mania started, by seven I had reached my peak. My mother still has nightmares with the theme song. I wanted nothing more than to be Jem. Let's sum it up for those of you who didn't know it: A girl inherits from her father the rights to a music company, along with a pimped-up Rolls and a machine that made holograms. She then decides to create an all-girl pop band under the name Jem, a pink-dressed disguise for herself. Need I say more? Oh, and that the hologram machine (Synergy) was controlled by a pair of pink, dazzling star-shaped earrings. It is very likely that this fact made me understand the importance of accessorizing in the first place.

I was hooked. I mean, it had it all: Jem and her "holograms" would dress in fancy 80s fashion (with her being pink all the time), they would sing really cheesy songs and travel around the world. Who didn't want to be that? It was also my first relationship awareness: The girl who played Jem (Jerrica) had a boyfriend who was in love with Jem the minute he saw her. So basically he was cheating on her with her holographic self. It made me sick and I didn't stand it, thus understanding at a young age that men are pigs and women are stupid. Ok, being that it has NOTHING to do with the outfit post - I was just nostalgic, watching old episodes and wanted to share - I will stop rambling. My look needs no explanation: boyfriend jeans and a big coat and scarf. Comfort at all levels. Including my socks: forgive me, laundry day.
