In case you haven't heard, the blogosphere and social networks have been buzzing tremendously today about Loewe's Gold Collection video, seen here:
In just a few hours, it has been so heavily criticized that I'm surprised you can still find the video. Which brings me to that infamous question: Is any publicity good publicity? Yes, you are trending topic in Spain, and will probably get a lot of attention from other markets with this fiasco. Yes, you got us talking about you, Loewe. But, when you are a brand that has always been associated with sophistication, class and poise, and you get quirky-funky youngsters with impossible haircuts carrying your several hundred euro bags... What are you thinking? What's your strategy? Does it make sense? Making your brand appeal to a younger crowd with these kind of tactics when you are an luxury brand is, to my opinion, marketing and fashion suicide. Not to mention that I hate the overall feeling of the video. To me seems kind of superficial and cliche.
So there you have it. Open for debate. Do you really want to sell at any cost? And is this really gonna make your financial bottom line bigger? Or the damages to your brand long term will not compensate the buzz that is generating? Going viral is not always positive, my friends. I wouldn't want to be in that marketing department today.
¿Realmente queremos vender a cualquier precio?
