Beauty Junkie: Monoi Oil

I'm so late with this post. Such a hectic week, but I think it was worth the wait. I will be focusing on this post and the next on my summer jewels. For today, how to achieve the perfect cinnamon tan. I want to clarify that I'm not in any way promoting sunbathing and that you should always wear the right protection. I know there's a lot of sensitivity with this issue.

Lo se, estoy bastante tarde con esta entrada. Con la semanita que llevo, pero bueno, creo que ha valido la pena la espera. Estaré enfocándome en este y el próximo post en mis joyas del verano. Para hoy, como conseguir un bronceado perfecto. Quiero aclarar que de ninguna forma estoy promoviendo la toma de sol y que se requiere usar siempre la protección adecuada según el tipo de piel. Lo digo porque sé que hay mucha sensibilidad con este tema. 

Monoi Oil: This is the best advice I can give to anyone. My secret, my must have. I cannot stretch this enough: this product is liquid oil. I love it, there's no summer without it for me. Ok, I'll admit that I have a rather nice skin color, probably the only Sicilian heritage that I got from my ancestors. Thus, I tan easily and it lasts longer than usual. However, since I use this product my skin is not only more hydrated, but my tans are more even, last longer and never peel off. So what is this marvel? It's an oil made fundamentally out of Tahiti's national flower, tiare, and refined coconut oil. It is widely used amongst in the French Polinesia to achieve smooth hair and skin. The original product is found and produced only in this region. I use and recommend buying the real thing, not something blended or from a pharmacy that usually just contains a part of it. There a different types and brands, I've used these two shown below, both are amazing (the one on the left even contains the stem of the flower). I always buy them online HERE with great results: the shipping fee to Spain is 5€ and you get them within a week (just got mine a few weeks ago, can't wait to finally use them both).

Tips: You must ALWAYS wear SPF first. Choose the best type for your skin, and apply evenly. This product is not a sunscreen (they have SPF but trust me, it's nothing). After you've done this, apply the oil over the body parts that you want to treat. I use it everywhere. This is ideal for the legs, which sometimes take longer to tan. Now, the face is a bit more controversial. I use SPF30 for my face (unfortunately, I'm getting older) and sometimes apply a little bit but only because my skin is very dry and I have a darker complexion. If you have extremely sensitive skin or oily complexion, avoid the face. For your hair, you can use it for split ends and dry or damaged manes. I like applying it on wet hair, but it works on dry as well. Monoi oil smells terrific, the perfume to me is so delicious, but if you want another option there is a vanilla scented one. Also, do not get surprised if your product turns solid: the real monoi oil does this when it is exposed to temperatures lower than 20º. It doesn't mean that it has gone bad, it will go back to oil once the temperature rises. Finally, use very little, it goes a long way. 

Aceite de Monoi: Este es el mejor consejo que le puedo dar a nadie. Mi secreto, mi imprescindible. No puedo enfatizarlo más: este producto es oro líquido. Lo amo, no hay verano sin esto para mi. Ok, admito que no tengo mal color, probablemente la única herencia siciliana de mis antepasados. Por lo tanto, mis bronceados duran bastante. Sin embargo, desde que uso este producto, mi piel no solo está más hidratada, sino que mis bronceados son más parejos, duraderos y nunca se pelan. Y bien, ¿qué es esta maravilla? Es un aceite fabricado a base de la flor nacional de Tahití, tiaré, y aceite refinado de coco. Es muy usado en la Polinesia Francesa para dar suavidad a la piel y el cabello. El producto original se produce allí, con denominación de origen. Yo uso y recomiendo el puro y original, no algo mezclado ni los que venden en la farmacia que suelen solo tener una pequeña parte de monoi. Existen varias marcas y tipos, yo utilizo los dos de la foto indistintamente, son geniales (el de la izquierda hasta contiene el tallo de la flor). Siempre los compro online AQUÍ con muy buena experiencia: el coste de envío es de 5€ y los recibes en 5 o 7 días (los míos llegaron ya hace unas semanas, muero por usarlos).

Tips: SIEMPRE debes usar protección solar primero. Elige la más adecuada para tu tipo de piel y aplica de forma uniforme. Este producto no es una protección (aunque tenga factor de protección no sirve de nada). Cuando lo hayas hecho, aplica el aceite en los lugares que desees. Yo lo uso en todas partes. Es ideal para las piernas que a veces toman más tiempo en broncearse. La cara es un poco más controversial. Yo uso FP30 para mi cara (que ya me estoy poniendo vieja) y a veces me aplico una gota porque mi piel es muy seca y lo tolera por mi color oscuro. Si tienes la piel muy sensible o un cutis graso, evita la cara. Para tu pelo, puedes usarlo en las puntas abiertas o en melenas secas y castigadas, siempre de medios a puntas. Me gusta aplicarlo al cabello húmedo, pero también funciona en seco. El aceite de monoi huele delicioso, tiene un aroma floral muy característico que me encanta, pero si quieres otro aroma tienes también la opción de uno infusionado con vainilla. Es bueno saber que el aceite de monoi verdadero se solidifica si la temperatura baja de los 20º, así que no te sorprendas ni te preocupes, no se estropea y se vuelve aceite tan pronto la temperatura sube. Por último, usa poca cantidad ya que suele cundir bastante. 

Beauty Junkie: Eyeliner and Scrub

Well, it's time to take a look at a couple more of my beauty addictions. We'll start with my eyeliner, since a few of you have asked me about it. 

Y bien, es hora de mirar un par más de mis adicciones de belleza. Empezaremos con el delineador de ojos, ya que alguna me lo ha preguntado antes.

Color Truth Cream Eyeliner by HIP. This is a painful topic for me, since HIP (High Intensity Pigments) by L'Oreal has been discontinued, leaving me heartbroken and buying all the final supply from Ebay. But I won't lie and make up another story of what I use. I've been addicted to this since I first tried it and it quickly substituted my kohl pencil eyeliner back in the mid 2000s. And YES, I've been into black eyeliner my whole life, maybe it's the Claudia Cardinale girl crush, the fact that I want to feel like I belong in a Fellini movie... I don't know, but way before the recent eyeliner madness I have been perfecting for years my technique (trust me, takes a lot of work). Ok, back to HIP. I've tried others since it's so hard to find in Spain and I can tell you that none of them lasts as long throughout the day as this creamy paste. Since my addiction has an expiration date, I will probably go back to MAC or a professional one from Harpo... or maybe browse again for a new brand. Sniff.

Tips. Your brush is CRUCIAL to a good application. I use one from MAC that I customized myself cutting it to make it more slanted. To me, this is the better option. Also, be sure that you close the lid very tight on the bottle or it will dry up. If this happens, microwave it (yes, microwave) without the lid, of course, for 3-5 seconds. Do not overheat. Then stir to make it creamier. Finally, be patient: creating a perfect line takes so much practice, and even with that, if you're like me and have a lazy eye, they will never be perfectly even. But imperfections are beautiful as well.

Este es un tema doloroso para mi, ya que HIP (High Intensity Pigments) de L'Oreal ha sido descontinuado, dejándome con el corazón roto y obligándome a comprar las últimas unidades por Ebay. Pero no les contaría jamás que uso otra cosa. He estado adicta a este producto desde que lo probé por primera vez y rápidamente se convirtió en el sustituto de mi lápiz kohl por ahí a principios de la década pasada. Y es que a mi me ha encantado el delineador negro toda la vida. No se si es mi obsesión con Claudia Cardinale o el hecho de que me gusta sentirme parte de una peli de Fellini... en fin, que antes del reciente vicio por los delineados sesenteros yo ya llevaba años perfeccionando mi técnica (y créanme, es mucho trabajo). Bueno, siguiendo con HIP. He probado otros delineadores en crema, ya que este es tan complicado encontrar en España, y puedo decir que ninguno de ellos me dura todo el día como esta maravillosa pasta. Y ya que mi adicción tiene fecha de caducidad, probablemente volveré a MAC o uno profesional como el de Harpo... o igual buscar nuevas opciones. Sniff.

Tips. Tu pincel es CRUCIAL para una buena aplicación. Yo utilizo uno de MAC que modifiqué, cortándolo para hacerlo más ladeado. Para mi es una mejor opción y facilita el delineado. Asegúrate además de cerrar bien el bote o el producto se secará. Si te pasa, mételo al microondas (sí, al microondas!) sin la tapa por 3-5 segundos. No hay que excederse. Luego hay que mezclarlo para hacerlo más cremoso. Y por último, ten paciencia: hacer el delineado perfecto toma mucha práctica, y aún con eso, si eres como yo y tienes un ojo distinto, nunca te quedarán perfectas. Pero las imperfecciones también son hermosas.

Anubis Aromatic Peeling Salt. Oh how I love you, my dear Anubis, for creating a scrub that is so deliciously oily and perfect. I've mentioned that I have extremely dry skin, especially in my legs, so I have to exfoliate at least once a week to make it smoother. This peeling is composed by aromatic plants and marine salts from the mediterranean coast. What makes it so special is that it contains so many nourishing oils: almond, sunflower, rosemary and chamomile, leaving your skin extra smooth even before moisturizing.

Tips. In the shower, try to wash first and exfoliate last, since you want to maintain that velvety and smooth feeling on your skin. Trust me, you will hardly need to apply lotion and for me this is so amazing, since I normally use both oil and bodymilk. It's a biphasic product, so you have to mix the liquid part and the salt before applying. Be careful not to use up too much of the oil phase (it can be tempting) because then it will be a little dry and not so easy to exfoliate with. If this should happen, you can put some essential oil like almond to get the texture right again.

Anubis Aromatic Peeling Salt. Te amo, mi querido Anubis, por crear un exfoliante tan deliciosamente aceitoso y perfecto. He mencionado que tengo la piel extremadamente seca, en especial en las piernas, así que tengo que exfoliarme al menos una vez a la semana para hacerla más suave. Este peeling está compuesto por plantas aromáticas y sales marinas de la costa mediterránea. Lo que lo hace tan especial es su alto contenido en aceites nutritivos: almendra, girasol, romero y camomila, dejando tu piel extra suave incluso antes de hidratarla.

Tips. Al ducharte, exfóliate al final, ya que quieres mantener esa sensación aterciopelada que deja sobre tu piel. Créeme cuando digo que apenas necesitarás aplicar crema, lo cual para mi es magnífico, ya que normalmente requiero bodymilk y aceite. Es un producto bifásico, así que tienes que mezclar las sales con el líquido al aplicarlo. Ten cuidado de no usar mucho la fase aceitosa (que puede ser tentador) ya que entonces se secará el exfoliante y no será tan fácil aplicarlo. Si te sucediese, puedes agregar algún aceite esencial de almendra para mejorar la textura nuevamente.
